Role of public awareness in cancer prevention

Incidence of cancer is increasing swiftly all over the world. A report provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 2020 has predicted a 12% increase in the incidence of cancer in India by 2025. Information about cancer should be actively disseminated among public to make them empowered and break the stigma surrounding it.

Risk factors and prevention-

Tobacco usage in any form is a known risk factor for cancer of the oral cavity and lungs. Role of human papilloma virus in cervical cancer is also another causation that is consistent. Rising obesity is also another factor linked with rising cancer of the uterus and breast. Hence, lifestyle measures to avoid these factors can make a huge impact in our fight against cancer. Public awareness is pragmatic to achieve this.

Symptoms and signs-

Many types of cancer manifests with symptoms and sign even in early stages. This includes cough, loss of weight, abnormal bleeding from any part of the body. Sensitization of public about these symptoms can make them seek early medical attention.

Screening –

Active screening for cancers and initiating early treatment is the way forward in a country like India. Participation of the government, health care providers and public are need to achieve effective screening programs. Screening for cervical, oral, breast and colorectal cancer has already been successfully implemented.

Treatment and stigma-

Stigma surrounding cancer needs to be addressed effectively. Mass media along with personalized programs for cancer prevention and treatment needs to be formulated for reducing the burden of cancer.
